Our Ethic
Our Commitment to Sustainability and Community
At Valhalla Mountain Touring, our ethics and operations are deeply rooted in respect for the environment, sustainable practices, and community engagement. From harnessing clean energy to supporting local initiatives, we strive to align our practices with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Environmental commitment in Action
Micro Hydro Power: Our lodge is powered by a micro hydro system, providing clean, renewable energy with minimal environmental impact.
Snowcat Access: Unlike helicopter-based access, our snowcat transportation significantly reduces the carbon footprint of reaching the lodge, aligning with our commitment to climate action..
Human-Powered Backcountry Skiing: At the heart of our lodge experience is human-powered backcountry skiing. Using your own power to skin up the mountains minimizes environmental impact while boosting mental and physical well-being.
Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals
By promoting human-powered outdoor recreation, we encourage physical and mental well-being
As a female-owned company, we strive for gender balance among our staff and leadership.
Our septic system ensures proper human waste management, and we use biodegradable, natural cleaning products to protect local water sources.
Our micro hydro system ensures a sustainable and affordable energy supply.
We create well-paying jobs for local residents, contributing to the local economy.
From sourcing merchandise made in Canada to partnering with local food producers, our supply chain reflects our dedication to sustainable consumption.
Our efforts, from snowcat access to local sourcing, aim to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment.
Beyond the Lodge: Our Commitment to Giving Back
By being part of 1% for the Planet, we are dedicating a portion of revenue to supporting environmental nonprofits that work on conservation, advocacy, and sustainability.
Who we support:
Wildsight – Focuses on conservation efforts in the Columbia Basin, protecting wildlife, forests, and water while promoting sustainable communities.
Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) – Works on connecting and protecting the vast Yellowstone-to-Yukon corridor for wildlife and ecological health.
Protect Our Winters Canada (POW Canada) – A climate action organization uniting outdoor enthusiasts to advocate for policies that combat climate change.
Living Lakes Canada – Works on freshwater conservation and restoration projects to ensure healthy lake and watershed ecosystems across Canada.
We are an official gold sponsor of The Cube 2.0:
A climbing gym project for the city of Nelson. More than just a gym, it will be a vibrant space for climbers of all levels, a meeting point for the outdoor community, and a place that fosters growth and accessibility in mountain sports. At VMT, we believe in supporting initiatives that strengthen our mountain culture and inspire future generations.
We are proud to support TAWKROC (The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climbers) in their mission to preserve and enhance climbing access in the West Kootenays. As a sponsor, we contribute to the development and maintenance of climbing areas, ensuring sustainable access for the community. TAWKROC’s work in trail building, route development, and environmental stewardship aligns with our values at VMT, and we’re excited to help grow the climbing culture in our region!
We are proud to support the Simon Parsonborough Fund, an initiative led by the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) and the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) to provide mental health assistance and counseling for guides. In a profession that demands resilience, both physically and mentally, having access to support is essential. This fund ensures that those who dedicate their lives to the mountains receive the care they need.
We proudly support Mountain Muskox, an initiative dedicated to providing peer support circles for individuals impacted by loss or trauma in the mountains. Inspired by the protective nature of muskoxen, these circles offer a safe space for healing, connection, and support. By backing Mountain Muskox, we aim to foster a resilient community where members can navigate their experiences together, reinforcing the bonds that unite us all.
Since 2007, the North Valley Mountain Film Festival has celebrated the mountain culture of the North Slocan, bringing the community together through films and photography. Now in its 18th year, the festival showcases local and professional stories of adventure, wilderness, and simple living.
Proudly supported by Valhalla Mountain Touring and local sponsors, this annual event thrives on community passion and creativity.
At VMT, we believe in supporting community initiatives that bring people together. That’s why we sponsor the Slocan Valley Soccer, a not-for-profit organization providing year-round, inclusive soccer programs for all ages. Their commitment to team spirit, respect, and skill development helps create a thriving sports community in the Slocan Valley.
